*** Please do not drain your pool into the street, especially during the road construction. Pool water can soak and deteriorate the sub-grades, which can in turn result in deterioration of the new asphalt. We have come too far and paid too much to have our new roads damaged by pool water. Pool water should be drained on your property this year. ***

Reminder of this week
Allied will continue grading the streets in Phase 1 (Amberly, Endsleigh, Covington Place, Glengarry) in preparation for paving next week. As a reminder, there can be no street parking during grading operations. Vehicles parked in the street may be subject to towing. Driveways will generally be accessible for parking; however, as with all the construction, you may experience delays getting in or out of your driveway and the street may be temporarily blocked.
Week of August 31
Paving of Phase 1 streets is currently planned for Wednesday 9/2 and Thursday 9/3, weather dependent. Front door notices will be placed about 48 hours prior to paving day. Phase 1 streets will be completely closed with no driveway access — in or out - on the paving days. See more information about paving below.
Around mid-week, Allied plans to begin asphalt removal (milling) in Phase 2. Tuckahoe will be milled first, followed by Sunnydale, Hupp Cross, Drury, Morningview and Overhill, in that order. Milling is scheduled for 3-4 days total. While streets will technically be open to traffic during milling, residents are advised to park elsewhere during the workday; driveway approaches and the streets may be blocked and delays may by lengthy. It would be best to avoid the area if at all possible. Importantly, there can be no street parking during milling operations. Vehicles parked in the street may be towed. Allied will provide golf carts to shuttle residents between their homes and their vehicles. Call 248-638-3190 to arrange a pick-up. Parking suggestions are provided below. Allied will begin prepping for curb removal on Bradway by milling the asphalt near/above the existing curbs. This work may push into the following week.
Week of September 7
Allied will complete milling in Phase 2, then begin grading the sub-grades to prepare them for paving. The streets will be graded in the same order as milling. Driveways will generally be accessible, but residents may experience delays and need to detour around the construction equipment. If you are on a tight schedule, the best option to avoid delays will be to park outside of the construction zone while your street is being graded. Parking suggestions are provided below. Week of September 14
Paving in Phase 2 will likely occur the week of September 14. Timing will be dependent on weather and the condition of the sub-grades.
Curb removal will likely begin on Bradway. Allied currently plans for separate crews on each side of the street, one starting at each end of Bradway and working toward the other end. More details to come after Labor Day.
Phase 1 paving
Prior to paving, Allied will spray the curb with tack, black tar-like substance, meant to help adhere the asphalt to the concrete. There is often overspray of tack on the dirt next to the curb. Avoid contact with the tack; it is very sticky and impossible to remove if it gets on driveways, sidewalks, cars, etc.
Allied will use a full-width paver on Phase 1 streets, which will be paving in this order:
Covington Place starting at Covington and moving west to Endsleigh;
Endsleigh, starting at Covington and moving west.
Amberly, starting at Covington and moving west.
Glengarry, starting at the north end and moving to Bradway
Asphalt trucks will be staged along Bradway, will back up Glengarry, then into each street to supply the paver. The asphalt trucks are bulky and do not have back-up cameras. There will be a lot of congestion — plan to stay out of the area completely on the paving day. Please do not try to navigate around the equipment.
Allied will be placing the first of two layers (“lifts”) of asphalt in next week’s paving. This lift will be 2-1/2 inches thick; the pavement will be about 1-1/2 inches below the curb, to leave room for the second lift.
Barricades will be placed at the ends of each street to keep traffic off the fresh pavement. DO NOT MOVE THE BARRICADES and attempt to drive, ride bikes/scooters or walk on the fresh asphalt; it is extremely hot when laid, and can melt shoes, tires, etc. Once the asphalt is sufficiently cooled, Allied will remove the barricades and open the street, generally by the end of the paving day. Once the street is re-opened, the asphalt is safe for traffic of all types. We will be driving on the first lift for a few weeks. Bloomfield Township has given Allied permission to pave until dark (i.e., after the normal 7 pm end of construction).
Plan ahead for the paving day. If you will need to get out of your driveway for any reason, park elsewhere — out of the construction zone — before 6:30 am. There will be no access to the streets in Phase 1 during paving. The only exception — emergency vehicles (only) will be able to get through in the event of an actual emergency.
Parking suggestions during Phase 1 paving:
Park on Glengarry Circle, or Glengarry outside of the construction zone. Williamsbury is also an option.
Oak, Yarmouth, Kent Ridge are options for those on the east side of Phase 1.
Park on Glengarry or Williamsbury south of Glengarry.
DO NOT PARK ON BRADWAY NEAR GLENGARRY. This area will be used to stage the asphalt trucks, which will need space to back into Glengarry. Allied will place no parking signs in areas needed for equipment staging.
Phase 2 milling and grading
Parking alternatives during milling/grading
Residents will not have access to their driveways on the day their streets are milled and may encounter significant delays during milling and grading. Suggested parking alternatives:
For Overhill, Morningview and Drury — park on Morningview east of Overhill, on Clifton, on Overhill north of Bradway or on Bradway.
For Hupp Cross, Tuckahoe and Sunnydale — park on Bradway or Tuckhoe/Hupp Cross north of Bradway.
Please do not park on any street where there is active construction.
Construction on Bradway
Allied currently anticipates construction on Bradway will begin after Labor Day. During Bradway construction, Allied plans to block off intersections with cross-streets, and limit thru-traffic on Bradway. These actions will require Village residents to detour around the closed intersections.
The Road Commission has advised Birmingham Public Schools Transportation Dept. of the on-going construction work and provided maps of the areas impacted. This discussion included a request to ensure that school children will NOT need to cross Bradway to get to their bus stops while Bradway is under construction. BPS is responsible for adjusting bus routes/bus stops to avoid Bradway, and will contact residents directly regarding bus stop locations.
Construction zone housekeeping and traffic control
We have heard a number of complaints about trash — food containers/wrappers, beverage bottles, etc. — left in the construction zone. We have discussed the issue with Allied and expect this situation to improve.
Allied expects to increase the number of flaggers to advise drivers when streets are blocked and they must detour around. Residents are asked to do their part and avoid the streets where there is active construction, if at all possible. If you MUST drive where construction activity is taking place, leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the equipment. Remember - construction equipment is loud with significant blind spots (and certainly no back-up camera); the operator may not see you or hear you.
Reminders
Please don’t park on either side of any street where there is active construction. Park in driveways or on a different street.
For your safety and the safety of the construction crew, PLEASE SLOW DOWN in the construction zones. Remind young drivers in your household to do so as well. We have had some near misses with drivers traveling far too fast on streets with active construction, often with cell phones in their hands.
